OUR HISTORY...

This community website, DeerhornValley.net began in the months following the devastating fires of 2007. The Harris Fire burned nearly 100,000 acres, claimed 5 lives and more than 500 structures. Our small community of Deerhorn Valley suffered the greatest loss of homes and property of any of the communities affectedby the Harris Fire.

One hard-to-measure loss is the ties that bound our community. Most of those who evacuated anticipated a day or two at the home of friends or family... or even the Stadium in Mission Valley. When we returned, a week later, it was to a devastated landscape... and homes reduced to ash and twisted metal. Some braved the destruction in campers and trailers, others opened up their still-standing homes to neighbors. A Relief Center flourished at the Fire Station, and Emergency Services provided temporary telephones and communication. Slowly we began to re-connect with one another.

ROBKimThis website, sponsored by the Deerhorn Valley Community Association, is dedicated to our community and fire-survivors of the 2007 fires. We will heal and we will grow stronger.

welcomeBillStevensMuchas grácias to Deerhorn Weather Monitor, Bill Stevens, for these stats. Deerhorn weather, like our terrain, is very specific to altitude and topography. Bill lives in Upper Deerhorn, so your records may differ significantly. We'd love to get rain totals for your neck of the woods!

Bill has recorded our rainfall totals for many years on the COCORAHS* site:

LYONS PEAK CAMERAS: OUR EYE IN THE SKY...

UCSD has four realtime HPWREN Cameras atop Lyons Peak. This is one way to monitor smoke and drift during wildfires. Clicking the image will open a hi-res page. Are these photos black? Check to see if it's nighttime!

STAY CONNECTED...

THE ANTLER: Our Local Newsletter

The Antler Newsletter has been a Deerhorn Tradition for many decades Antler27Covernow. It began during the drive for a permanent Fire Station back in the 1970's. Editors and contributors have included Hazel McKinley, Rob Deason, Dot Adams, Marge Ayres, Shirley Lawson, and so many others.

A community newsletter is a vital link that keeps us connected with neighbors, happenings, and issues that affect us and aren't covered in the mainstream media.

The current issue and archive of the past few years are avaialble here. Eventually we'd like to post all back issues in our online Archive... it's a wonderful history of this special place we are so fortunate to call "home."

If you don't have a mailbox at your property, we can mail to your PO Box or other address. We just ask a small donation ($5/year) to help us cover the added postage. Thanks!

SIGN UP FOR ANTLER ALERTS & UPDATES

Antler Alerts are email notices that alert residents to wildfire, accidents, down trees, lost dogs, loose horses and other backcountry situations. They are not foolproof and depend upon residents who call or email with information. One sign-up on Our Antler Page is all it takes. We don't share your email with anyone else, and this has proven to be a valuable way to stay informed about emergencies and backcountry news.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONNECTIONS:

Some of the quickest and most accurate information will come from friends and neighbors on the scene. With a backup generator to power your computer, satellite and radio internet will most likely be working.

Emergency organizations and local authorities suggest using text messages and social media (Twitter, FaceBook, etc.) during disasters as a way to keep phone lines open for emergency responders. Bookmark our Deerhorn links to have available during the next emergency:

BLOG: deerhornvalley.blogspot.com/ Current goings-on. "Blog" postings are right here on our Home Page. Scroll to the bottom and you'll see our list of emergency links. You can also go directly to deerhornvalley.blogspot.com

TWITTER: twitter.com/deerhornvalley Short alerts and messages you can receive by cellphone or access by internet.

FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/deerhornvalley A spot to ask questions, say hello, share news, post pictures, and come together during emergencies. There are some great snow pics there now!

VIEJAS ALERTS: DeerhornValley.net and The Antler strongly recommend that every resident sign up for EastCounty Magazine's VIEJAS ALERTS. ECM is a strong voice for East County and the backcountry. Their VIEJAS Wildfire Alerts are an important part of staying informed about emergencies.
